San Andreas was released in 2004 and was the first 3D game in the Grand Theft Auto series (Rockstar Games produced it). The player controls one of three different characters; these include Carl Johnson, who grew up in Los Santos, San Andreas (the state that GTA San Andreas takes place in); Sweet, whose real name is Lance Wilson and who, like Carl Johnson, came from Los Santos; and Big Smoke, who was born in Washington Beach, Los Santos (he also grew up there). At the start of the game, Carl Johnson's brother Sweet has been murdered by gang member Frank Tenpenny.

The game’s protagonist, Carl CJ Johnson, is a young man who returns to his hometown of Los Santos after spending five years in Liberty City. Los Santos – a parody of Los Angeles – is based on real-life neighborhoods like Compton and South Central.
